I like Craig Charles. A lot. The guy knows his music and clearly loves playing it out to people.
If I spend half my time working for the BBC and the other half at ITV then I’d probably let my hair down on a Saturday night but Charles’ skills were a little sloppy when he first took to the decks, causing a few grimaces.
‘We play funk and we play soul’ is a phrase that Charles bands about, usually with just cause, but I think he might have taken the wrong record bag out with him tonight. He dropped ‘Hot Damn’ by The Haggis Horns to open proceedings nicely but then I listened to an overly long remix of that Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson song and every offering of funk or soul thereafter was accompanied by some dance beat or a speeded up remix.
I’ve said bad things thus far, but it’s crucial to know I actually had a great night. I drank beer, I danced, I hung out with friends and Craig fucking Charles was on the decks sounding big through Plug’s amazing system.
It may well have been a tad disappointing for the aficionados but, hey, there’s always his 6Music show.
