In terms of homecoming gig venues, Queens Social Club may not be the biggest—or indeed the grandest—but Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor (plus numerous friends) more than made up for any lack of architectural prestige at their pre-Christmas gig there this fine evening.
It’s credit to this gig that the wanton showmanship of a man playing a saxophone solo whilst jauntily sauntering across the QSC bar wasn’t the show highlight. That accolade would befall Taylor whose inimitable vocals delighted throughout, not least on new track ‘The Queen’s Nose’ that hinted at a new bluesy direction which we may see on album number three.
The finale, which followed an angelic rendition of 2008 single ‘Christmas TV’, saw the stage rammed with accomplices, as the intimate atmosphere became infused with celebratory festive cheer.
Tonight, Slow Club proved that the best gifts do indeed come in small packages.
